The Problem

Recent statistics in Canada reveal a troubling rise in bullying, sexual harassment and violence in schools which is linked to broader struggles faced by youth. The following statistics highlight the urgent need for effective violence prevention education:

Increased Violence in Canadian Schools

  • In Ontario, 1 in 5 students report experiencing some form of bullying or violence at school.

  • Approximately 30% of students have witnessed physical violence or threats among their peers.

  • According to data from the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) in 2023, 77% of educators reported witnessing or experiencing violence in schools

Teen Dating Violence

  • 2018 Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces (SSPPS), 1 in 10 Canadian teens reported experiencing physical violence in dating relationships

  • 4% of Canadian teens reported sexual violence.

  • Between 2009 and 2022, over 40,000 teens aged 15 to 17 reported incidents of dating violence to police. The number of these incidents has been steadily increasing.
